Gatineau: pedestrian shopping yard

A winkelerf (dutch concept for "shopping yard") is applied in the Vieux-Hull section of Gatineau, where a public square paved with interlocking stones has been created at the T-shaped intersection of rue Aubry, rue Kent and an alley leading from rue Laval. There is a fountain in the middle and the streets that radiate outward from the centre are lined with bars and restaurants. Cars are allowed on the streets, but they move very slowly due to the large numbers of people on foot . The space is well populated at nighttime on the weekends but also at lunch hour during the week, when workers from local office towers come to eat or to sit on the terrasses.
