The Cool Island pilot project in the Milton Parc and Mile End neighbourhoods aim at creating a showcase of many local level greening possibilities. This project was a nominee at the 2008 Gala de reconnaissance in the environment and sustainable development categories.
End results:
70 trees, 260 shrubs, 86 climbing plants and more than 200 perennials were planted.
Three information sessions on how to handle urban heat islands (55 participants), two balcony garden workshops (17 participants), four workshops on worm composting (55 participants) and two workshops on green roofs (39 participants),
A guided tour of the Milton-Parc island (25 people) completed this fruitful project.
More than 775 citizens were informed by pamphlet distribution.
65 people participated thanks to 11 planting activities.
Greening project sites are:
1 elementary school (Lambert-Closse);
2 non-profit housing organizations;
8 housing cooperatives;
2 major private housing complexes (Place du Parc and Appartements LaCité);
2 smaller private landowners;
1 alley.
