Participatory Budgeting on the Plateau

Our working group on municipal democracy and citizenship (GTDMC) along with the Borough Plateau Mont-Royal collaborated with local community organizations to design and implement the first participatory budgeting (PB) process on Quebec soil.

This process was inspired by the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil experience. Its participatory budget was acclaimed as one of the top 40 urban innovations across the world during the Habitat II United Nations Conference at Istanbul in 1996. Since then, more than 300 cities worldwide, about 50 in Europe, have developed locally-adapted participatory budgeting processes.

The GTDMC proposed participatory budgeting as a new tool for a more thorough democratization process of our city . This group is available for hosting conferences and workshops on participatory budgeting.
